Hate Crime

In the Hollywood formula “guy gets attacked and then revenge” film, you always know what’s going to happen next. Not so in this well-written and superbly acted film about a murdered gay man whose lover then seeks justice. Robbie and Trey have a picture-perfect life. They live in a pretty house, have a cute dog and supportive family and neighbors. All that changes when a new anti-gay neighbor moves in. Chris Boyd is a far right-wing preacher’s son and he’s filled with attitude towards the gay men living next door. So much so, he threatens them in anger. When Trey goes out one night to walk the dog and is beaten to death, all eyes point to Chris. After all Chris’ father, Pastor Boyd (Bruce Davison,) is a fundamentalist preacher who rails against homosexuals and Chris has made threats. But then a policeman with attitude gets the case, Detective Esposito (Giancarlo Esposito,) and he starts to believe that Robbie murdered his lover for the life insurance money. All Robbie wants is justice for his murdered partner and he’ll sidestep the police if need be. Hate Crime is a testament to power of love, a portrait of the hate that fundamentalism can cause and a damned good thriller.
